First of all, my apologies for the tardiness of this my October missive. I had planned to mail it out on the 31st of October but unexpectedly faced a bit of a horror story of my own. Halloween was spent writhing in bed and the next day considted of ten and half hours in Accident & Emergency (E.R.) as your faithful scribe passed a kidney stone. I’m happy to report I’m on the mend and getting my writing mojo back.
The focus of my newsletter for October is my military ghost story, THE BROOKWOOD BOYS, published last Halloween. It’s the story of ‘Mouse’ Forsyth, a WW1 soldier buried in an unknown warrior’s grave in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, UK, in 1918. Since then, he's been the caretaker of lost souls, greeting the good, the bad, the mad and sad, until one day, he is seen and can communicate with the living for the first time.
Mouse’s story is intertwined with that of many other soldiers buried at Brookwood, some based on real graves and individuals. Not all of the stories I discovered during the course of my research made it to the final edit of the book, including the story of Italian soldier Antonio Amodeo, a character I was always rather fond of.
If you'd like to read a FRE chapter about him, please sign up to my newsletter and I'' send it to you, along with details of his gravestone and its location. The first half of his story is fiction but tragically the second is not. I hope you enjoy it and that the ‘join’ is not too visible. In other news, the sixth novel in my Jox McNabb WW2 Aviation series novels, THE RAPIDS AND THE ABBEY, where Jox goes through the final, brutal throes of the Italian campaign, will be published on the 19th of December 2025. It’s currently on pre-order pricing on Kindle and will be available in paperback. I’ve been assured this will still be in time to get hard copies for Christmas, so go on, get the old boy (or gal) something they might actually want this Christmas. I’m currently 65,000 words into writing the seventh Jox McNabb story, working title THE HUNTERS AND THE WRATH. It will see our Jox participate in the greatest amphibious operation in history, flying Hawker Typhoons, the dreaded Jabo, feared by all German troops in Normandy. Jox and his new unit will also contend with the Führer’swrath, the devastating V-1 Doodlebugs. I hope to have the novel published in time for the D-Day anniversary in 2026. Wish me luck.
Until the next time, thank you for the ongoing support.
